Deep within the enchanting rolling hills, resided a boy named Shepherd. His existence was pure, simple yet virtuous. His main role was to care for his herd of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the rustling of the breezes across the solo tree on the mountaintop were his constant companions. Day in day, watching over his charges instilled in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. During one such occasion because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plot.
Stories of wolves prowling on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One day he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills for rescue but discovered no wolf.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This trick laughed for a couple of more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf actually attack the herd. The shepherd boy ran for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf here but could protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to receive a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
